See yourself in others and

reduce self-judgment.

According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 2017 Point-In-Time Report, more than half a million Americans experience homelessness on a given night.

Every day we interact with others. We choose to perceive relationships as good or bad, easy or hard, convenient or inconvenient. Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist, said, “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”

This experience of being mobile has changed how I look at others. Instead of judging them as addicts, scammers, and mentally ill, I see myself in them and I see their inner light. They need love and a home, just like I do.

Now when I pull up to an intersection in my clean, air-conditioned car, I look at the men and women who ask for money and say to myself, “I’m homeless too.” I read their signs. I make eye contact and smile. I give them money when the traffic lights allow.

When have you seen yourself in others?

An exhausted mother in the grocery store with a screaming toddler, a disheveled colleague who just lost their parent, a child struggling to fit in.

Please share your experience with me. Why? Because that’s me too.
